Q. Who is Brett Flanigan?

A. Brett Flanigan, the President and mastermind behind The Proactive Company is no stranger to leadership and coaching. At the age of just 28, Brett Flanigan became the youngest ever head coach in the National Basketball League, when he took over the position of head coach of the Canberra Cannons. A position he held for the next eight years. During the eight years Brett held this position, he led the Canberra Cannons to the play-offs on three occasions and to the Semi Finals on one occasion in 1996. At the completion of the 1996 season, he was voted by his coaching peers as the National Basketball League Coach of the Year.

Brett Flanigan, is now one of Australia’s leading corporate consultants, building teamwork and developing improved execution in the workplace. Brett has a wonderful understanding of the Asian Pacific culture, and has worked extensively throughout the region conducting key-note presentations, and field force ‘Execution’ programs.

Brett is an enthusiastic, humorous and motivational speaker, whose practical methods of teambuilding and leadership have translated from the sporting arena to the business sector, and is in high demand with his popular courses on Coaching Leadership and Team Building.

Q. What Does “Proactive” Mean?

A. While the dictionary puts the origin of the word “proactive” in the 1930’s, most people became familiar with the word as it was used in the book Man’s Search for Meaning by psychiatrist, Victor Frankl in 1946. In this book he talks about a person who takes responsibility of his or her life, instead of looking for causes in outside circumstances or other people. Frankl calls this the “proactive person”. This same term was also made popular in the business world from Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
